Local roundup: Red Raiders top Gateway, keep grip on first place

Isaac Ellsworth poured in seven 3-pointers in scoring a game-high 25 points as Uniontown maintained its grip on first place in Section 1-AAAAA with a 82-73 win at Gateway in boys basketball action Tuesday night.

Kelan Milsom (22) and Notorious Grooms (21) also topped the 20-point mark for the Red Raiders (5-0, 10-3). Calvin Winfrey III added 14 points.

Uniontown led 15-13, 38-25 and 61-47 at the quarter breaks.

Mykel Bruce-McCrommon tied for game-high honors with 25 points for the Gators (3-2, 5-6) who would’ve pulled into a first-place tie with a win. Jax Vovaris had 15 points for Gateway.

Southmoreland 72, Waynesburg Central 62 – Noah Felentzer scored 24 points as the Scotties built up a nine-point halftime lead on their way to a Section 4-AAA win at Waynesburg.

Ty Whoric (15), Brady Sherbondy (12) and Stanley Chapman (11) also hit double figures for Southmoreland (2-0, 9-2).

Cole Headlee led the Raiders (1-1, 1-9) with 18 points and six assists, Alex VanSickle scored 17 points and Alex Eck totaled 10 points and seven rebounds. Waynesburg also got eight boards from Dane Woods.

Fort Cherry 47, Jefferson-Morgan 43 – Shane Cornali totaled 19 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and 22 rebounds as the host Rangers rallied in the fourth quarter to hand the first-place Rockets their first defeat in Section 3-AA play.

Fort Cherry (3-2, 5-6) led 8-2 after the first quarter before Jefferson-Morgan (4-1, 8-3) fought back to take a 24-23 halftime lead and held a 37-30 advantage after three. The Rangers outscored the visitors 17-6 in the final frame to pull out the victory.

Matt Sieg (13) and Evan Rogers (12) also scored in double digits for the Rangers. Sieg, who recently returned from injury, also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Houston Guesman led the Rockets with 11 points.

Belle Vernon 85, East Allegheny 60 – Zion Moore scored 25 points with four 3-pointers and four steals and Tommy Davis contributed 20 points, 14 rebounds and also four steals as the visiting Leopards rolled past East Allegheny in a Section 3-AAAA game.

Trevor Kovatch added 13 points for Belle Vernon (4-1, 9-4) which also got seven assists from Don Ghilani.

Cedrick Mack had 20 points for EA (0-4, 3-9) which also got 13 points apiece from Chris Portis and Jayden Patterson.

Charleroi 60, Mount Pleasant 44 – Brock Henderson scored 14 points and the visiting Cougars took control by outsourcing the Vikings 19-8 in the second quarter on their way to a Section 4-AAA victory.

Charleroi led 20-11 after one quarter and 27-23 at halftime then pushed their advantage out to 46-31 after three and stayed in control from there.

Shea Smith had 12 points and Braedon Todaro chipped in with 10 for the Cougars (1-1, 7-6).

Cole Massari tallied 12 points for Mount Pleasant (0-3, 0-12).

Mt. Lebanon 77, Connellsville 42 – Carter Gould scored 21 points as the Lebos cruised to a Section 2-AAAAAA win over the visiting Falcons.

Liam Shelly and Sam Deibert added 15 and 14 points for Mt. Lebanon (3-2, 7-4).

Rocco Farrell paced Connellsville (0-5, 3-9) with 14 points.

Girls basketball

McGuffey 52, Waynesburg Central 34 – Lexi Ewig and Taylor Schumacher each scored 15 points in the Lady Highlanders’ Section 3-AAA win over the visiting Lady Raiders.

McGuffey (3-1, 8-4) held a slim 4-3 advantage after a low-scoring first quarter but outscored Waynesburg 18-6 in the second to take a 22-7 halftime lead. The Lady Raiders clawed their way back to within 30-25 after three quarters before the Lady Highlanders used a 22-9 edge in the final frame to pull away.

Avery Davis led all scorers with 21 points for Waynesburg (2-2, 6-4).

Baldwin 83, Uniontown 13 – Lynsey Bernotas was one of four Lady Highlanders in double figures with 16 points in a Section 4-AAAAA win over the visiting Lady Raiders (1-3, 4-6).

Julianne Ott (13), Mary Vargo (10) and Hannah Prilla (10) also hit double digits for Baldwin (2-2, 6-6).

Mt. Lebanon 53, Connellsville 31 – Payton Collins scored 20 points in the Lady Lebos’ Section 2-AAAAAA victory at Connellsville.

Mt. Lebanon (2-1, 7-4) held a 12-6 edge after one quarter then blew the game open with a 20-4 advantage in the second for a 32-10 halftime lead.

Natalie Jacobs tossed in nine points for the Lady Falcons (0-3, 3-10).

Mount Pleasant 44, Southmoreland 23 – Morgan Gesinski scored 12 points to spark the Lady Vikings past host Southmoreland in a Section 3-AAAA game for their first win of the season.

Mount Pleasant led 10-4 after one quarter then took control of the game with a 15-2 edge in the second for a 25-5 halftime advantage.

Olivia Aumer was the top scorer for the Lady Scotties (1-4, 3-9) with nine points.

Peters Township 61, Albert Gallatin 29 – The Lady Indians raced out to a 30-5 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back in picking up the Section 4-AAAAA victory over the visiting Lady Colonials.

Natlie Wetzel led Peters Township (4-0, 11-2) with 21 points and Bri Morreale had 13.

Mya Glisan tallied nine points for Albert Gallatin (0-5, 4-6).

Boys swimming

Ringgold 91, Belle Vernon 53 – The Rams defeated the host Leopards in a Section 5-AA meet.

Tim Reda picked up individual wins in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle and teamed up with Derek Milkovich, Gaige Watson and Brady Malekovich to place first in the 400 freestyle relay for Belle Vernon (0-1, 5-2).

The Leopards also got individual wins from Watson in the 200 IM and Milkovich in the 100 freestyle.

Girls swimming

Ringgold 87, Belle Vernon 72 – The Lady Rams topped the host Lady Leopards in a Section 5-AA meet.

Ava Bosetti swam to individual wins in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle and teamed up with Megan Shusteric, Josie Nikolic and Grace Newbould to place first in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay for Belle Vernon (1-1, 4-3).

The Lady Leopards also got individual wins from Shusteric in the 200 freestyle, Nikolic in the 100 backstroke and Newbould in the 100 breaststroke.
