Local roundup: Commodores knock off California, 67-43

Dalian McManus scored a game-high 22 points and Frazier took control from the start in rolling to a 67-43 victory in a Section 1-AA boys basketball game Wednesday night.

The Commodores stormed out to a 24-11 lead in the opening frame and extended their advantage to 36-17 at halftime and 52-26 after three quarters.

Kolby Stewart followed with 18 points and Conlan Higbee added 10 for Frazier (1-4, 3-9).

Jacob Ziolecki led the Trojans (0-5, 2-9) with 14 points.

Southmoreland 64, Ligonier Valley 53 – Ty Whoric poured in 26 points as the first-place Scotties fought off the host Rams in a Section 4-AAA game.

Southmoreland (3-0, 10-2) led 8-6, 25-19 and 41-27 at the quarter breaks.

Noah Felentzer tallied 14 points for the Scotties.

Parker Hollick led Ligonier Valley (1-1, 6-5) with 20 points.

Carmichaels 37, Mapletown 27 – The host Mikes rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit for a Section 3-AA win over Greene County rival Mapletown.

Dayton Reynold led Carmichaels (2-3, 3-7) with 10 points, Steve Lewis followed with nine and Robbie Wilson-Jones added eight.

The Maples (0-5, 0-10) led 11-6 after one quarter and increased their advantage to 21-14 at halftime. The Mikes pulled even at 25-25 after three quarters then outscored Mapletown 12-2 in the final frame.

Lucas Stevenson and Tyler Howard each scored eight points for the Maples.

Neighborhood Academy 81, Geibel Catholic 32 – Courtney Wallace scored 20 points and Shamar Simpson followed with14, including the 1,000th of his career, in the Bulldogs’ Section 2-A win over the visiting Gators.

Derrick Hardenman and Syncer Nicholson contributed 11 points apiece for Neighborhood Academy (3-0, 11-1) which also got 10 points from Kedron Gilmore.

Evan Strimel led Geibel (1-2, 6-5) with 11 points. Gary Tarbuk and John Hess each tallied six points.

West Greene 68, Burgettstown 40 – Lane Allison led a foursome of Pioneers in double figures with a game-high 19 points as West Greene toppled the visiting Blue Devils in a Section 3-AA game.

Parker Burns (13), Patrick Durbin (11) and Matt Wassil (10) also reached double digits for West Greene (4-1, 6-5), which took a 19-7 lead in the first quarter and pulled away from there.

Kolton County had 13 points for Burgettstown (0-5, 3-9).

Girls basketball

Laurel Highlands 69, Belle Vernon 29 – Ayriana Sumpter tossed in 21 points in the Lady Mustangs’ Section 3-AAAA victory over the visiting Lady Leopards.

Taylor Irwin sank four 3-pointers in scoring 14 points for Laurel Highlands (3-2, 8-4) which also got 12 points from Aierra Jenkins and 11 points from Miya Harris, who hit three 3-pointers.

Abby Russell and Aubrey Brown tallied six points apiece for Belle Vernon (2-3, 4-8).

Beth-Center 48, Carmichaels 13 – Violet Trump and Callie Dorsey each rang up 13 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ Section 3-AA victory over the host Lady Mikes.

Beth-Center (2-1, 7-5) took a 13-2 lead in the first quarter but Carmichaels (0-3, 0-11) held a 3-2 edge in the second to stay with 15-5 at halftime before the Lady Bulldogs took charge by outscoring the Lady Mikes 19-2 in the third.

Duski Staggers had four points for Carmichaels.

California 46, Uniontown 42 – Hayley Gibson scored a game-high 17 points as the host Lady Trojans triumphed over the Lady Raiders in a non-section battle.

California (4-3) led 11-5 after the first quarter but Uniontown (4-7) surged to a 24-21 halftime advantage. The Lady Trojans went back in front in the third quarter, 32-31, and outscored the visitors 14-11 in the final frame.

Olivia Gibson added 16 points for California.

Tessa Nicholson tossed in 13 points for Uniontown which also got seven points from Lyric McLee.

Boys wrestling

Connellsville 69, Hempfield 0 – The defending WPIAL champion Falcons blanked Hempfield in the Section 8-AAA opener for both teams.

Connellsville (1-0, 3-1) got pins from Jake Lilley at 133, Julian Ruggieri at 145, Ryan Brown at 189 and Roghan Hollis at 285.

Also victorious for the Falcons were Kai Vielma by technical fall at 139, Luke Lilley by major decision at 127 and Nolan Rice and Cooper Lembo by decision at 121 and 172.

The Spartans fall to 0-1 in the section and 1-4 overall.

Jefferson-Morgan 71, Brownsville 0 – The Rockets recorded six falls in whitewashing the Falcons in a Section 3-AA match.

J-M (1-1, 7-3) got pins from Brayden Hanning at 107, Caleb Dulandey at 114, E.J. Lingenfield at 121, Johnny Gilbert at 145, Alex Palko at 189 and Landon Heath at 285.

The Rockets’ other wrestled victory as by Connor Pinchok by technical fall at 127.

Brownsville falls to 0-3 in the section and 0-4 overall.

Belle Vernon 46, West Mifflin 21 – The Leopards won 7 of the 10 matches that were wrestled in claiming a Section 7-AAA win over the Titans.

Colby Hibner had the lone fall at 145 for Belle Vernon (2-1, 2-1) which got technical falls from Rylee Doppelheuer at 106, Vander Razkowski at 132 and Deyson Soto at 138, all by 15-0 scores.

Also victorious for the Leopards were Enzo Ortolona by a 10-0 major decision at 113 and Connor Hoffman by a high-scoring 16-11 decision at 152.

West Mifflin falls to 0-2 in the section and 5-8 overall.

Southmoreland 40, South Park 20 – The Scotties rang up five falls and took seven of the 10 matches that were wrestled in knocking off the Eagles in a Section 7-AA match.

Southmoreland’s pins were by Parker Thompson at 114, Kolten Lewnadowski at 133, Shawn Hollis at 152, Landon Delara at 172, and Kaden Shannon at 215.

Also earning wins for the Scotties (3-1, 6-6) were Micah McGeary by decision at 127 and Hunter Ryan by decision at 145.

South Park falls to 3-1 in the section and 6-6 overall.
