Lady Scots advance to quarterfinals with 3-1 win
ALVERTON ëƵ Southmoreland lost the third set and visiting Seton-La Salle kept gaining the edge in the seesaw fourth set.
But, the Lady Scots didnëƵt panic and gained control of the fourth set for a 3-1 victory Wednesday night in the opening round of the WPIAL Class AAA volleyball playoffs.
Southmoreland was poised for a sweep after winning the first two sets, but the Rebels stayed alive with a 25-16 win in the third set. Seton-La Salle led 18-11 and held the advantage throughout the set.
ëƵI think the other team picked it up with their serving intensity. Our girls, we have moments. We like to have that comeback kids story, whether weëƵre ahead or behind,ëƵ explained Southmoreland first-year coach Michelle Pergar. ëƵWe have a quiet demeanor, sometimes. We need to make sure weëƵre intense in a positive way.ëƵ
Southmoreland rallied from an 18-16 deficit for a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
Pergar noted the camaraderie her squad has that helps them get through rocky periods.
ëƵThese girls, theyëƵre very close. TheyëƵre best friends, on and off the court, so I think that helps, and they play multiple sports together,ëƵ said Pergar. ëƵThatëƵs what I feel is different.
ëƵThey just sometimes need a little moment, a timeout here or there. ThatëƵs why I took that early timeout. Sometimes they just need a little pep talk. I think sometimes they just need to laugh.ëƵ
Southmoreland won the first two sets, but had to work to do so after trailing in both.
The Lady Scots eked out a 25-23 win in the opening set. With Riley Puckey serving, Southmoreland rallied into the lead and Taylor Doppleheuer finished things off for a 25-17 win.
Zoey Willing finished with 11 assists, nine kills and two digs. Doppelheuer was tough at the net with 14 kills, as well as the service line with five aces. Riley Puckey contributed 13 assists, three kills and two blocks. Makayla Etling added eight kills and three digs.
Southmoreland (15-3) plays South Park in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
ëƵWeëƵve played South Park before. We will watch some film and see if they do anything different. TheyëƵre a tough team,ëƵ said Pergar. ëƵIëƵm excited (to win her first playoff game). These girls work hard.
ëƵItëƵs nice to see them grow and nice to see them through their season.ëƵ
