James A. Gnagey

James A. Gnagey passed away peacefully Thursday, August 20, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, generosity, faith, and deep commitment to his community. He was born May 7, 1933, the son of Mary Elaine Marteney Gnagey and E.J. Gnagey.
James graduated from North Union High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1955, including an overseas assignment in Germany.
On September 24, 1955, James married the love of his life, Nancy. Together, they shared 65 years of marriage, building a life and family firmly grounded in both love and devotion.
Gnagey Gas and Oil was founded by Jim’s father in 1942. After his father’s passing, in 1963, Jim assumed the responsibilities of day-to-day operations, while his mother handled the bookkeeping. Jim later purchased the company from her in 1975, and continued to proudly work there until the very end of his life.
James believed strongly in giving back and the importance of generosity. In addition to honorably serving on the Fayette Penn Economic Development Board, Jim embodied his values through his business practices. When fuel and oil shortages of the 1970s brought economic pressure to his customers, Jim refused to raise prices so he could keep his community warm in tough times.
Jim was a man of deep faith. He was a 55-year member of Calvary United Methodist Church and an avid supporter of Jumonville and its mission of bringing others to know Christ. More than simply supporting these organizations, Jim lived his belief in service by investing his own time, resources, and money into the local community whenever he saw an opportunity to help. His generosity touched many lives, though he never sought recognition or fanfare.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Elaine and E.J. Gnagey; as well as his wife and son, Nancy and Scott Gnagey.
He leaves behind his daughter, Joy Lynn Gnagey Huston; and his granddaughter, Kelly Filburn and her husband, Adam. In addition, he leaves behind the many friends, neighbors, colleagues, and members of the community, whose lives were enriched by his kindness and generosity.
James will be remembered for his hard work and countless accomplishments, but more importantly, he will be remembered for the people he helped, the community he believed in, and the example he set through a lifetime of service and giving. His legacy will continue through the family he loved and the community to which he gave so much.

FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORIES, INC., 80 Morgantown Street, Uniontown, PA 15401, Monday, August 24, from 2 until 8 p.m. Viewing will continue Tuesday, August 25, from 10 a.m. until the time of a service celebrating Jim’s life at 11 a.m. in Calvary United Methodist Church, Clark Street, Uniontown, with the Rev. Ryan Washabaugh officiating. Interment in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown.
